About a month ago I drove up to Playa Ocotal Guanacaste to shoot a wedding for a couple from Canada.  I had been excited to shoot this wedding for quite a while, as I had never been to Playa Ocotal and this would be a completely new venue with a totally different environment to shoot photos. Guanacaste is a drier climate than the Central Pacific where I live, and on the way up I could see the vegetation quickly changing.

I arrived the day before the wedding to meet the wedding couple and to get a look at where the preparation, ceremony, and reception would be held.  At the beach I observed where the sun would be setting, and I also saw some great lava rocks on the far side of the beach.  At mid tide it seemed like that within these rocks there would be some reflective pools that would look good in the photos with the bride and groom.

The day of the wedding I began by shooting some formal portraits of the guests.  The bride and groom had decided that instead of photos of them getting ready, they preferred to have portraits of their guests that they could later give as gifts for making the effort of coming to Costa Rica to be a part of the wedding.  We shot these portraits at Villa Cascadas, on one of the many balconies that overlooked the ocean.

We then headed down to the beach where the Villa had set up a nice arch for the wedding.  The lawyer gave a great ceremony and the bride and groom presented their own vows.  Afterwards we got a few shots of family and friends with the nice afternoon light, before heading over to the rocks for the portraits of the bride and groom.  The rocks and the pools turned out to be even better than I had imagined, and I only needed to add a little extra lighting.  So I had my lighting assistant teetering on the edge of the pools holding up a big soft box, trying to properly expose the bride and groom.  We only had 20 minutes to shoot with the sun setting in the background, but I feel we were able to walk away with some interesting portraits.

It turned out to be a great couple of days and some totally different photos from the type of weddings I shoot in Manuel Antonio.  Luckily, next month I have another wedding booked in Guanacaste.  Another beach to be discovered.
